As a marble producing country, Greece has been famous since antiquity. The ancient marble quarrying has been intensive in the 6th and the 5th C.B.C.

Thassos Island is very famous for its ancient quarries. A visitor can still see the remains of these quarries. Also there was an outstanding school for sculpture, which was flourishing especially in 7th and 6th centuries B.C.

Today, a visitor can admire the beauty of ancient sculpture works in the museum of the island. Thassos marble was also transported to other places around the world such as Asia, Africa, and Rome.
